Herbs for Postpartum Wellness
Herbs can be incredibly supportive for postpartum mamas. From the nervous system to the uterus to the digestive system, there are tremendous shifts going on in new mama’s bodies that can be eased with plant medicine. Here are a few of my favorites:
Milky Oats rebuilds and replenishes the nervous system. Protects from burnout. Soothes frayed edges.
Motherwort is a mother’s hug in plant form. Relieves after-birth cramps, soothes painful emotions, calms the nervous system. In cases of heavy bleeding, use in small doses only.
Tulsi is an adaptogen that protects the body against stress and anxiety. Helps to move stagnant digestion.
Fennel supports breast milk production and digestion. Fennel taken by mama will travel through the breast milk and help baby’s digestion as well.
Ashwagandha is an adaptogen that supports sleep, rebuilds energy, and reduces stress.
Shatavari is a female reproductive tonic. Supports milk production, regulates the nervous system, supports hormonal balance, rebuilds energy and vitality.
Calendula supports lymphatic flow. When used topically in a sitz bath or peri-rinse, it is antimicrobial and supports wound healing.
Red Raspberry Leaf tonifies the uterus and helps it return to pre-pregnancy size. Supports milk production and moderates bleeding.
Ginger supports digestion and circulation. Brings warmth back into the body. Relieves cramps.
Cinnamon is warming and supports digestive function.
Dill flower essence can help with sensory overload. This can be especially supportive for mothers with older children in the house.
Skullcap is supportive to the nervous system. Especially helpful for anxiety-induced insomnia.
